THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The TMU Bold women’s volleyball team picked up their second straight three-set win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday (25-18, 25-12, 25-18), securing the weekend sweep after Friday’s victory.
The Bold were strong defensively, showcasing strong blocking and picking up 34 digs to Lakehead’s 13 digs.
TMU jumped out to a 6-1 lead early in the first set and never looked back. Lakehead called a timeout trailing 18-12 but it was too late to change the momentum and the Bold surged ahead to set point before Ashley Ditchfield landed a kill to secure the first set win at 25-18.
In the second, the visitors started strong once again, leading 7-1, thanks in part to a pair of big blocks. The momentum from those plays carried the Bold forward and the lead grew to as many as 14 before wrapping the set at 25-12.
Lakehead battled early on in the third set, keeping things close at 12-12. However, the Bold attack took over from there and TMU was assisted by a trio of successive Lakehead errors to jump out to an 18-13 lead. Once the lead opened up, the Bold ushered the win home and earned the win after a Thunderwolves attack error.
The Bold defence held the Thunderwolves attack to just 23 kills and forcing the home side into 36 errors for a dismal -0.222 hitting percentage.
TMU has now won five straight games and will look to continue their streak next Friday, January 19 when they visit the McMaster Marauders for the second time this season. In their first meeting, the Bold handed the No. 4 ranked Marauders their first, and only, loss of the season.
