Dalhousie’s Glen-Carter and Toronto Metropolitan’s Shaikh named U SPORTS volleyball players of the week

Dalhousie’s Lucy Glen-Carter and Toronto Metropolitan’s Saad Shaikh are the U SPORTS volleyball players of the week for the period ending February 19, 2023.

Lucy Glen-Carter is the U SPORTS player of the week in women’s volleyball after an impressive 48.5-point weekend. The senior surpassed the 1000 career kill barrier and broke the AUS record for kills in a single season. In the Tigers’ 3-2 defeat against the Acadia Axewomen, Glen-Carter earned a match-high 24 kills, 19 digs and two aces. On Saturday, the Torontonian collected 18 kills, nine digs, two blocks and an ace, receiving player of the game recognition in a 3-1 victory over the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

The Tigers take on UNB in an AUS semifinal series this week. Matches are set for Thursday, Friday and, if necessary, Saturday nights.


Saad Shaikh, Toronto Metropolitan

Hometown: Mississauga, Ont.

Academic program: Retail Management 

Fourth-year setter Saad Shaikh earned U SPORTS player of the week honours in men’s volleyball after a strong finish to his career on home court. The setter picked up 34 assists on Friday night to help the TMU men’s volleyball team upset the then-No. 2-ranked McMaster Marauders to close out the regular season. Shaikh also had five digs and one service ace, while his composure kept the Bold on track all night to finish the three-set sweep.

The Bold are back in action on Saturday night as they have a rematch with the Marauders, this time in an OUA quarterfinal, at 8 p.m. in Hamilton.
