VANCOUVER (U SPORTS) – The No. 5-seeded Dalhousie Tigers earned a decisive 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-18) victory over the No. 4 UQAM Citadins in the first quarterfinal matchup at the 2023 U SPORTS Women’s Volleyball Championship, presented by Mikasa to book their ticket to the semifinals at War Memorial Gym in Vancouver, B.C.
Dalhousie captured a back-and-forth first set with a big Grace Calnan block before cruising through the second set and fending off the Citadins comeback in the third set to take the tournament-opening straight sets win and advance to Saturday’s semifinals.
Lucy Glen-Carter recorded a match-high 13 kills with five digs for the AUS champion Tigers, setter Brett Boldon racked up 26 assists, Clanan had three total blocks and three kills, and Ella Hornby added eight kills while hitting at an impressive .571 clip in the victory. Sabrina Mater and Anica Pineault each tallied nine kills to lead the RSEQ champion Citadins offensively, while libero Ariane Pelosse-Brunelle had seven digs and two assists, Noemie Gagne totalled 16 assists with two blocks, and UQAM hit just .110 in the loss.
With the win, the Tigers secured the first semi-final berth against either the No. 1-seeded Trinity Western Spartans or the No. 8 McGill Martlets at 6:00 p.m. (Pacific) on Saturday, while UQAM enters the consolation bracket and will face the loser of the Spartans vs. Martlets match at 1:00 p.m. (Pacific) Saturday afternoon.
