York University Lions men’s volleyball player Dennis Cota and women’s hockey player Emma Wedgewood have been named York athletes of the week for the period ending Jan. 14.
Cota, a second-year kinesiology & health science major, tied for the team lead in kills on Saturday with 12, helping cement a four-set win over the Waterloo Warriors to earn a split of the two-game weekend series between the two teams. The Mississauga, Ont. native also had a pair of blocks in the win. For the weekend, the Lions middle back combined for 19 kills and five blocks.
He and the Lions now get set for a two-game Forsyth Cup playoff rematch with the Queen’s Gaels on Friday and Saturday night in Kingston. Both matches begin at 8:00 pm.
Wedgewood, a second-year goaltender and also a kinesiology & health science major, had a stellar weekend between the pipes for the Lions against the Nipissing Lakers. She made 47 saves in a tough OT loss on Friday in North Bay, and came back on Sunday with 35 stops in a 3-1 Lions victory. She combined for 82 saves and a .953 save percentage in the two games.
Wedgewood and the Lions also head to Kingston this weekend for a pair of critical games with the Gaels as they look to make a late postseason push. The first game is scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 pm, before the teams reconvene Sunday at 2:30 pm.
