The Camosun Chargers are the defending PACWEST champions in women volleyball and through the first eight matches are 4-4.
On the women’s side the Chargers are coming off a weekend sweep on the road and have won three of their last four, all on the road. They will head home for this upcoming weekend to play back-to-back matches with the Douglas Royals before the holiday break. The women’s team have looked quite a bit different this season compared to their CCAA silver medal team from last year.
GRADUATES:
Correina McNeice was the heart of the defensive side for the Chargers last season as the libero. She was an excellent passer and found herself in very good position more often than not as she tallied 200 digs.
Chantelle Dobin did an excellent job pulling the middle with Gracie May last season. Dobin collected 23 blocks and chipped in with 19 aces
Hannah May the All-Star was such an important piece of their attack last year recording 140 kills and always drew attention when she was on the floor. She also had 30 service aces and 187 total offensive points. What doesn’t show in the stat line, is her enthusiasm and leadership on the floor. It was infectious and helped the Chargers capture the PACWEST gold.
IMPACT RETURNERS:
Erica Bolink is back this season and has made an impact early on with 82 kills. Last year she finished with 245 kills, second most in the Conference and a Conference leading 67 aces and 322 total points.
Gracie May is a leader now in her fourth season and is being relied upon for her play at the net. In 14 sets this year she has collected nine blocks and leads her team with 13 aces.
KEY ADDITIONS:
Mya Robinson joined the Chargers this season from Vernon Senior Secondary and has tallied 11 digs thus far.
Libero Sloan Thomson (pictured) comes west 1,649.9kms from Saskatoon to join the Chargers and has 66 digs so far this year.
Edyn Van Brabant hails from Bawlf, Alberta, 25kms east-southeast of Camrose. She has played only three sets this season as she learns the speed of each set.
The Chargers have one more weekend before the holiday break as they travel home following six straight on the road. They will host the Douglas Royals on Friday and Saturday with two points separating them in the standings.
