June 02, 2021: After defeating China on Tuesday, Canada’s women’s team claimed a 3-0 (30-28, 27-25, 25-14) victory over Germany on Wednesday. It is the team’s second win at the 2021 FIVB Volleyball Nations League.
Again Kiera Van Ryk (Surrey, BC) led scoring with 18 points, followed today by middle blocker and team captain, Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, ON) with 12 points
“We are so excited and so pumped that I feel like we could go and play another game, that’s how excited we are. The last two days have been amazing, and it’s been a long way to get here, but I feel like all the pieces are coming together for our team,” Cross said in the post-match interview. “We have some girls who have been around together for some time and we also have a lot of new players and for them this tournament is so much international experience. I think we just needed to build up to this. … We just kept going, keeping aggressive and to finish the match like that, this shows some serious character.”
Said coach Shannon Winzer: “I think today was a real test for the team. Not only is Germany a tough opponent but we also know that good teams at this level can back up wins. Today’s win in three sets just confirmed that Canada can play at this level.
“We are very happy with the progress so far. Every day we want to get better and so far we are doing that. We make mistakes and we have weaknesses, but there is such a willingness to learn from them that it only makes us better the next time we play. We will keep building from here.”
The preliminary round runs to June 20 for the women and June 23 for the men. The Canadian men resume play tomorrow against Iran.
