Third-year middle blocker, Emma Boyd, has been named to Volleyball Canada’s 2024 Women’s Next Gen team.
The Next Gen program focuses on identifying, selecting, and training a roster of high-performance athletes who have the potential to compete for Team Canada’s Senior Women’s National Team in the future. The program provides athletes with a full-time training environment focused on technical and tactical development, with access to a full coaching staff and support team to guide their athletic development.
“I’m super excited to be joining the Next Gen program this summer to play volleyball alongside some of the best girls in the country and to see how much I can develop as an athlete! It has always been a dream of mine to represent the leaf and I’m beyond excited that I get a chance to do that!” Boyd said after earning a spot on the team.
Boyd finished the season with 217 kills on a .270 hitting percentage, 71 blocks as well as finishing seventh in Canada West service aces with 36.
“The whole student athlete/coaches/IST community at MRU has been instrumental in getting me to this point in my career. Especially Shane and Donata, in their time at MRU not only did they push me and develop me as an athlete but they also helped me grow as a student and a person. They have believed in me every single step of the way and continue to support me!” Boyd said.
Alongside Boyd, former MRU Cougar middle blocker Nyadholi Thokbuom has also been chosen for the Next Gen Program.
Competition opportunities include the 2024 Pan Am Final Six in the Dominican Republic June 24-30, and the 2024 Pan Am Cup in Mexico in August.
