GUELPH, Ont. – The TMU Bold women’s volleyball team is coming off a three set sweep last night against Guelph and faced the Gryphons again to end their regular season on Saturday.
Both teams went back and forth on the scoreboard last night during each set and tonight started the same.
In the first set, the Bold grabbed the reigns of this game and made a pretty big lead almost 10 points ahead of the Gryphons.
Mary Rioflorido wasted no time in letting any balls hit the ground and came in with a big save in the first.
The Bold finished the first set strong and efficiently, leaving little room for error. Head coach Dustin Reid has been urging the team to work on limiting errors and tonight they showed that with minimal attack errors.
Leaving the first set with a score of 25-14 for the Bold, they needed to play exactly how they did in the first and leave very few chances for the Gryphons to catch up.
Julie Gordon brought her A-game to the court tonight, tallying seven kills in total.
In a very tense weekend against the Gryphons, the Bolds’s support for one another on and off the court was very encouraging.
The Gryphons felt the game slipping and came fighting in the second set, but the Bold were not about to back down from what they came to do.
Over a long season, this team has found the right chemistry on the court and trust that their teammates have their back.
It’s exactly that type of play that gave this team so much more confidence tonight against the Gryphons.
In the second set, the Bold built a smaller lead, but the Gryphons attacked a lot more.
Mikayla Sherriffs does what she knows best and racked up the kills against the Gryphons. The Bold managed to set up multiple good plays anytime they receive a free ball, securing the point every time.
Late in the second, the Bold took the lead once again and created more and more chances.
As both teams continued to fight, longer rallies were happening but Sarah Zonneveld helped shut them down fast, racking up 25 assists.
The second ended with a final score of 25-14 for the Bold, this was now a 2-0 game.
The third set was all about finishing this game strong, with a three-set sweep. Each of these matches prepares the Bold for their upcoming playoff games.
The Gryphons slowly lost their footing in the third, allowing the Bold to take a five point lead before the first timeout.
Lauren Veltman stepped up and brought the ball down on the Gryphons side leading with the most kills tonight of nine.
The Bold suffered a few errors in the third, leading to a comeback for the Gryphons but it was no match for the fight the Bold had put on this entire game.
A lot of effort and strategy by the Bold ultimately led to their success with the final score in the third being 25-21.
By the end of the game, the Bold racked up 34 kills and 12 service aces which outdid the Gryphons.
The Bold are coming home with back-to-back wins in Guelph, and ending off their season on a seven game win streak. Stay tuned for more playoff details starting next week.
