The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team defeated the No. 3 Queen’s Gaels 3-0 on Saturday (Jan. 13) afternoon at the Goldring Centre Kimel Family Field House.
Set scores in the match were 25-23, 25-20, 27-25.
Following yesterday’s 3-1 triumph over the Gaels, the expectations were high for the Blues. With an incredible balance between offence and defence, Toronto’s teamwork bloomed into a three-straight set victory. In the face of a game-high 95 total attempts by the Gaels, the Blues put on a defensive show, featuring 30 digs. The Blues defensive performance coupled with 20 attacking errors from Queen’s, put the game in the hands of the Toronto offence. Overall, the Blues offence would record 20 kills and 17 assists to push the Blues over the Gaels.
Second-year outside hitter Hunter Arulpragasam shined for the Blues recording eights points by way of seven kills, seven digs, and one solo block. Second-year setter Michael Hickey was key to the Blues offence recording 13 assists in addition to two service aces. Orchestrating the defense was third-year libero Rylan Armstrong with nine digs.
The Gaels were led by Zig Licis who recorded a game-high 13.5 points through 12 kills, one service ace, and five digs.
The Blues will return to the court on Friday (Jan. 26) at 6 p.m. visiting the University of Guelph Gryphons.The match will be live streamed online at oua.tv.
