The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team defeated the TMU Bold 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 21-25, 25-20) on Saturday night (Feb. 4) at Mattamy Athletic Centre.
TORONTO STATS: Hope Kotun led the Blues, delivering 19 kills and three service aces for a total of 22 points, while also adding nine digs on the night. Julia Murmann notched 15 points off of 13 kills, one ace and one block and added 18 kills.
Second-year libero Natalia Souza recorded a team-high 20 digs, while setter Jasmine Safar had 33 assists in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The first set was neck and neck as the lead changed hands five times. Having settled in, the Blues started dominating with ruthless kills by Murmann and Kotun and ended the set with multiple key blocks.
The second set followed a similar favourable pattern to the first with the Blues and the Bold fighting it out at the beginning of the set and U of T ultimately getting ahead. A 6-0 run midway through the set helped Toronto to a 25-17 victory.
The Blues found themselves trailing the Bold by seven in third. Following TMU’s biggest lead of the night, U of T played harder than ever and evened it out near the end but was unable to complete the comeback.
The fourth and final set was reminiscent of the first. Kotun once again stepped up, delivering multiple precise kills, to secure a Saturday night win for the Varsity Blues.
UP NEXT: The Blues return to action next Friday, February 10 as they travel to North Bay, Ont., to take on the Nipissing Lakers. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
