The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team downed the visiting Western Mustangs in their second game of the weekend. The match lasted five sets on Saturday (Nov. 11) afternoon at the Goldring Centre Kimel Family Field House.
Set scores in the match were 25-15, 26-24, 17-25, 19-25, 15-10.
The Mustangs and Blues rallied back and forth throughout the duration of the match. With each team winning two sets in a row, the final set was anyone’s game. While the Blues scored the first two points, it was the Mustangs who took the lead. However, the Blues fought hard and rallied from behind to win the set through critical offensive plays. The Blues led the Mustangs in total attacks and blocks which paid off with the win.
The Blues top finisher on the match was second year outside hitter Olivia Zhu who tallied a game-high of 25.5 points from 23 kills and two service aces. She also assisted the team’s defence with 9 digs. Additionally, outside hitter Julia Murmann recorded 19 points from 17 kills, one service ace, and one solo block. Muramann was also a major contributor defensively with 16 digs.
Setter Robin Melnick was crucial for the Blues offence. Melnick tallied 42 assists, three kills, one service ace, and one solo block.
Blues libero Delaney Watson registered a team-high of 32 digs during the five sets.
The Mustangs were led by outside hitter Devin Gerth who recorded a team-high 19 points from 17 kills, one service ace, and two block assists.
Next up, the Varsity Blues will travel to Thunder Bay, Ontario on Friday, November 17 to face-off against the Lakehead Thunderwolves. First serve for the match is scheduled for 6 p.m. The action will be live streamed via oua.tv.
