Opening their preseason schedule on the road, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team played a total of five exhibition matches at the Gee-Gees Preseason Classic in Ottawa this past weekend.
The Blues began the first preseason outing with a pair of matches on Friday, Sept. 29 versus the Dalhousie Tigers and UQAM Citadins. In a highly competitive opening contest Toronto came up just short in a 2-1 loss against Dalhousie, with set scores of 16-25, 25-23, 22-25. Quickly back on the court versus UQAM that afternoon, the Blues fell 2-0 in the best-of-three match with set scores of 19-25, 12-25.
Back in action early the next morning, Toronto dropped two Saturday (Sept. 30) matches 2-0 versus the Guelph Gryphons and host Ottawa Gee-Gees. Despite the losses, both matches were back-and-forth with the Blues pushing the pair of OUA opponents to the brink. Set scores in the match versus the Gryphons were 19-25, 22-25, and against the Gee-Gees required extra points finishing 21-25, 24-26.
On the final day of competition, matches shift back to a typical best-of-five. U of T once again showed a strong resolve, especially in a third set versus the St. Mary’s Huskies which saw the teams push into the thirties for extra points, but the Blues fell in the sweep. Set scores for the Sunday (Oct. 1) contest were 21-25, 18-25, 29-31.
Next, the Blues will remain in Toronto for another preseason outing versus the York Lions on Friday, Oct. 13. First serve at the York campus is scheduled for 8 p.m.
