‘Birds Kick Off Weekend With a 3-0 Victory in Brandon

Published on

BRANDON, Man. – The energy of the crowd from the 2022 Canada West home-opener was definitely on the side of the Brandon Bobcats. The results however were not.

Height and experience were both in UBC’s favour and the Thunderbirds delivered, taking the match in straight sets by a score of 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-18).

Brandon had just two regular starters from last season in the starting line-up but managed to muster a few runs.

The runs from UBC of 9-2 in the first, 8-3 in the second and 14-4 to start the third were enough for the ‘Birds to win comfortably.

The Thunderbirds were dominant from the service line as well, managing 11 aces to Brandon’s three and at the net, out-blocking Brandon 10 to two.

UBC was led by Elise Petit’s match-high nine kills while Lucy Borowski wasn’t far behind with eight on just 15 swings to go with no errors.

Brandon was led by Avery Burgar’s team-high seven kills.

The win improves UBC’s record to 3-0 early in the season while Brandon sits at 0-3.

The two teams meet again Saturday afternoon at the Brandon University Healthy Living Centre. First serve is schedule for 5 p.m. CT/3 p.m. PT.
