Beach volleyball gets underway in Santiago on Saturday

SANTIAGO, Chile, October 20, 2023 – The Pan Am Games beach volleyball tournament kicks off this weekend at Peñalolén Park in Santiago. 

It will run from October 21 to 27 and will include 32 teams, with 16 pairs per gender.

On the women’s side, Melissa Humana-Paredes (Toronto, Ont.) and Brandie Wilkerson (Toronto, Ont.) will be a team to watch, with their first match at 10:30 am local (CLST, one hour ahead of Eastern time) on Oct. 21.

Canada’s men’s entry is Jake MacNeil (Georgetown, Ont.) and Alex Russell (Surrey, B.C.) and they begin their tournament against Ecuador on Saturday at 12:30 pm local time.

Teams will compete in a preliminary pool stage, with four groups of four teams in each gender.

The top teams in each pool will advance to the quarterfinals, while the second and third-placed teams will play in the round of 16 to determine the eight best teams in the tournament. From there on, semifinals and medal matches will be played. Teams that finish last in their group will compete for 13th place, just as the losers in the round of 16 will play for 9th place, and those defeated in the quarterfinals will play for the fifth position.

Live streaming coverage of the Pan Am Games officially begins Friday, October 20 with a full day of competition starting at 8:20 a.m. ET and the opening ceremony at 7:30 p.m. ET. The official broadcaster of the 2023 Santiago Pan American Games, Pan Am Sports Channel, will also be available for free in Canada throughout the event, offering additional live feeds of sports coverage, ensuring that Canadians will have even more opportunities to follow the action at the multisport event.
