WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Acadia Axewomen beat the Memorial Sea-Hawks 3-1 (17-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-14) on day two of the AUS League Tournament.
Memorial University started off day two of the league tournament right where they ended the prior
night. Cecilie Dumaresque (St John’s, NL) and Sarah Trowbridge (Sunnyside, NL) led the attack for the
Sea-Hawks, each tallying three kills going into the technical timeout.
Memorial setter Margaret Henley was able run her offence without many complications, regularly going to Trowbridge for the attack.
Trowbridge ended the set with six kills. The Sea-Hawks won the first set 25-17.
Acadia found their stride in the second set. Both teams battled hard with several well contested rallies
happening. Acadia had the edge at the technical timeout, leading 16-15. The Axewomen’s attack grew
as the set went on with fourth year hitter, Taylor Collombin (Victoria, BC) earning a team high eight kills
in the second set. Acadia won the second set 25-21.
The Memorial blockers had a hard time dealing with the strong arms of the Acadia hitters in the third
set. Collombin continued her strong play, adding two more kills before the technical timeout. The team
went on a six point run before the break, leading 16-9 at the technical timeout. The timeout didn’t slow
down Acadia, with the Axewomen adding three more points before Melissa Hatfield ended their streak.
Acadia won the set 25-13.
Acadia continued their strong hitting in the fourth set, finding gaps in the Memorial blocks several times.
They led the Sea-Hawks 16-6 at the technical timeout. The Axewomen were able to survive a late push
by the Sea-Hawks to with the fourth set 25-14.
The Subway player of the game was Kate Kramer (Vancouver, BC) of the Axewomen.
Both teams return to the court on Sunday for game three of the weekend. Memorial will play winless
Universite de Moncton at 12pm, while Acadia will battle host Dalhousie at 4pm.
