For the first time in school history the Camosun Chargers are PACWEST gold medalists after a three-set sweep of the VIU Mariners. The Chargers dominated from the first serve winning 25-19, 25-22 and 25-23. The Chargers will head to the CCAA national championship as the PACWEST representative while the Mariners will be the hosts.
On Saturday the Chargers used a balanced offence led by Player of the Match Rilyn Boorman who collected 12 kills. Hannah May in her final PACWEST match was also excellent with nine kills and Erica Bolink added seven kills to round out the offensive punch.
The Mariners were a bit short handed with a pair of key injuries to Megan Duffy and Lainey Granly but still played well. Cassidy Kitchen collected 10 kills and Sophie Krupp came off the bench to add six. Setter Linnea Brickwood was solid distributing the ball and was named the Player of the Match.
Following the match, the 2023 PACWEST tournament All-Stars were announced:
Claire Newsome – COTR Avalanche
Payton Henderson – Douglas Royals
Linnea Brickwood – VIU Mariners
Cassidy Kitchen – VIU Mariners
Hannah May – Camosun Chargers
Erica Bolink – Camosun Chargers
MVP – Rilyn Boorman – Camosun Chargers
After the match Ryan Watters caught up with Chargers head coach Brent Hall.
