Box Score Coming off a gutsy win last weekend on the road, the Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team was back at home this weekend.
Hosting the Guelph Gryphons in a pair of key matches for both teams, there was quite a bit on the line.
Despite some moments of brilliance and another strong effort, the Lakers came up short, losing 3-1 to the Gryphons in the first of two meetings this weekend.
In the opening set, neither team disappointed.
Guelph jumped out to an early lead and led for the majority of the set, building up leads of 9-5 and 17-11 midway through.
From there, Nipissing took over and closed the gap to just five, down 22-17.
Another run had them tied 23-23 before the Gryphons put the set away with two straight points, winning 25-23.
Nipissing bounced back in a big way in the second set.
An early 7-1 lead for the Lakers gave them all the momentum they needed as they absolutely controlled the game and picked up a 25-11 win to even the match up 1-1.
Much like the first set, Guelph grabbed an early lead and held on as they regained the lead, winning 25-17 to go up 2-1.
In the third, the Lakers refused to go away without a fight.
They found themselves playing from behind for much of the set, but fought back from being down a handful, climbing withing two late, but ultimately coming up short, losing 25-22 in the final game of the match.
Paige Owen led the Lakers with 14 kills, while Amy Connelly posted 11 in the match.
Nipissing and Guelph are back at it Saturday afternoon to wrap up the weekend, hitting the court at 4pm.
