TORONTO, Ont. – On Tuesday, November 21, 2023, the U SPORTS office released its latest national rankings for the 2023-24 season. The Gryphons men’s volleyball team headlines this week’s rankings, making their season debut at No. 10 after an undefeated start to the 2023-24 campaign. The U of G women’s hockey team and women’s wrestling team each fell two places, to No. 6 and No. 9, while the men’s wrestling team holds their position at No. 7.

Women’s Hockey – No. 6
The Gryphons women’s hockey team fell two places in the latest U SPORTS Top 10 rankings after a pair of OUA West divisional games this past week. The team went 1-0-1 in the two matches, defeating the Waterloo Warriors 2-1 in regulation on Wednesday, November 15 before falling 1-0 to the Laurier Golden Hawks Friday night (Nov. 17). The Gryphons still sit atop the division standings with a two-point advantage over the Golden Hawks and have a seven-point cushion on the third-place Brock Badgers. The Gryphons will head to Waterloo for a rematch with the Golden hawks this Thursday (Nov. 23) before taking on the Badgers on the road Saturday (Nov. 25).
Wrestling – No. 7 & 9
The University of Guelph wrestling teams were in Toronto this past weekend (Nov. 19) at the Tait Mckenzie Centre for the York Open. The meet was highlighted by a pair of rookie performances from Cooper Feke and Tyler Barry, who each claimed the top spot in their respective weight divisions (57 & 61kg) to earn wins in their first career university meet. The women were led by Jayden Sparks who earned an apperance in the bronze medal match. Following the meet, the Gryphon med stayed put at No. 7 while the women fell two spots to No. 9. The Gryphons will take an extended break as the reach the end of their fall-semester schedule. The teams will return to action January 13, 2024 for the Brock invitational.
Men’s Volleyball – No. 10
After an undefeated start to the regular season the Gryphons men’s volleyball team have cracked the U SPORTS Top 10, making their debut appearance in 2023-24 at No. 10. The team has opened the season with wins over the Waterloo Warriors, Nipissing Lakers, and most recently Trent Excalibur to begin the season 6-0. Their impressive start sees the team in a tie with the No. 3-ranked Queen’s Gaels for the top spot in the OUA standings. It is the best start to a campaign for the Gryphons since the 2019-20 season which saw the team open the season 5-0, and first appearance on the U SPORTS Top 10 since November 19, 2022. The team will now head to Toronto to take on the 1-4 York Lions Friday (Nov. 24) before hosting the No. 7-ranked McMaster Marauders on December 1 and 2 to close out the fall semester.
