The seasons have officially wrapped up for both BU Bobcat volleyball teams but two outstanding athletes are being recognized as the final Smitty’s Sportsline Lounge Athletes of the Month for the 2023-24 season.
Carly Thomson and Paycen Warkentin were recognized Tuesday afternoon at Smitty’s after closing the season with impressive performances and some more individual accolades to their names.
Carly Thomson played every match in February the way she played every match all season, leaving It all on the line and striving for constant improvement for both her team and herself.
She was impactful by running a smart spread offence against challenging Canada West opponents with maturity, focus and a confident attitude. Thomson’s improved performance as the season rolled along led to other players seeing tangible results as well, as multiple attackers saw increasing attack efficiency as Thomson’s play improved.
Paycen Warkentin concluded his storybook Bobcat career with a record-setting single season mark. Warkentin’s 122 blocks tied fellow conference leader Philipp Lauter and set the new Brandon University single season record.
Warkentin was electric all season long, as his powerful blocks set the tone for the Bobcats while mirroring his incredible attack efficiency. The fifth-year middle had an error-free night on Feb. 16 against UBC en route to a .370 mark on the season.
Both players are in consideration for major awards as part of the Bobcats’ Year-End Awards Ceremony, set for April 1.
