MVB: Huskies Win in Three Against UBC Okanagan

KELOWNA, BC – Fresh off a bye week, the Saskatchewan Huskie men’s volleyball team made the trek to Kelowna to take on the UBC Okanagan Heat on Friday morning. The rare Friday afternoon game was due to UBCO’s annual School Day Game as they packed the stands with over 700 elementary and middle school children.

The energy was electric but despite their efforts, the Heat were no match for the eighth ranked team in the nation and the Huskies won in three sets (25-19, 26-24, 28-26).

THE HIGHLIGHTS

  • After the Huskies claimed the first set, in large part due to a 9-0 run in the middle of the set, the Heat kept scoring tight in the second set as they raised their consistency on offence.
  • Both the Heat and Huskies would have nearly identical kill percentages, thanks to an impressive eight kills from the Heat’s Renn Petryk in the middle frame. A late three-point run would put Saskatchewan over the top to take the set. Saskatchewan’s Isaiah Mamer put up five kills in the set.
  • In the final set of the match, Petryk and Jack Taylor would both put up four kills as the Heat went point-for-point with the Huskies. Lucas Musschoot was a big presence at the net, with a huge block halfway through the set. Once again, a three point run would close out the set and clinch the match for Saskatchewan.

THE STATS

  • UBC Okanagan’s Renn Petryk and Saskatchewan’s Isaiah Mamer would lead in kills with 15 each.
  • Lucas Musshoot was a wall at the net with five assisted blocks for the Huskies.
  • Middle blocker Jack McGeough was precise on Friday afternoon, with a .833 attack percentage, the highest of the game.
  • UBC Okanagan had the service ace advantage over Saskatchewan, with five aces.
  • Libero Ethan Smith led the way in digs with 13 overall, followed closely behind by the Heat’s Jack Taylor with ten.

THE STANDINGS
The win gives Saskatchewan a 6-1 record and second spot in the Canada West standings. UBC Okanagan moves to 1-6 and second last place in Canada West.
