TORONTO, Ont. – The women’s volleyball team fought tooth and nail against the York Lions today in a 5-set long match. Impressive offensive power and defensive hustle allowed them to come out on top, narrowly defeating the resilient Lions.
The first set went just how the Marauders wanted it to. York showed great defensive effort but it wasn’t enough to handle McMaster’s powerful hits. McMaster led by a large margin, closing out the set 25-16.
York had a massive comeback for the next two sets. They really started to get into their groove offensively. Combined with their perseverance on defence, they were able to stay in the game even when behind. The Marauders remained intimidating, however, with outside hitter Sullie Sundara bagging two aces in a row to start the third set out strong. York also racked up a number of impressive blocks, ending the game with 10, which was more than twice that of McMaster. The Lions took the second set 25-19 and the third set 25-21.
With the momentum going York’s way, the Marauders tried to get back into the game in the fourth set. Both teams were hustling hard. There were plenty of long rallies, made possible by impressive defensive efforts, such as from libero Hayley Brookes who recorded 26 digs in the game. The Marauders won the set 25-19.
The final set was full of drama. Both teams were giving it all and neither could gain a clear lead. As they approached the end of the 15-point long set, the score was 14-14. McMaster, however, was able to finish on top, with a cool and collected ace from outside hitter Abby Delamere granting them the final point to take the set 16-14.
The Marauders showed their maturity and resiliency this game as they rode through the ups and downs. Sullie Sundara led the game in kills, with 18. Outside hitter Maddy Lutes also played well with 13 kills and 2 blocks, as did setter Payton Entwistle who had 29 assists and 3 aces. The team now has 3 straight wins to start the season. They hope to extend their streak this coming weekend in their double header against the Windsor Lancers.
