SASKATOON, Sask. – On Saturday night (Nov. 2) at the Physical Activity Complex, the Saskatchewan Huskies prevailed over the Mount Royal Cougars by a final score of three sets to one. The win completes the weekend sweep of MRU, which saw Saskatchewan drop only one set over their two games with the Cougars.
After falling in the first set 25-21, the Huskies stormed back to win the next three sets 25-16, 25-21, 25-21.
Midway through the second set marked the game’s turning point for the Dogs as the home-side found themselves down 15-10 and in danger of going down two sets to zero. However, the Dogs went on a 6-0 scoring run thanks to kills from Ethan Smith and Jacob Baird along with a series of attack and service errors from MRU.
In total the Huskies tallied 44 kills on the evening, led by fourth-year Emmett Graham who outpaced all hitters with thirteen. The 6’5” Arts & Science major is off to a strong start this season, leading the Huskies with 25 kills over the first two games. Graham is also looking to build off a solid 2023-24 campaign, which saw the lefty hitter lead the Dogs in total kills (359) and kills per set (3.98).
Not to be outdone, third-year Huskie Isaiah Mamer also had a strong night, contributing to the Dogs’ victory with seven kills for a total of twenty so far on the season. Mamer is coming off a strong sophomore season as the Wilkie, Saskatchewan product totaled 334 kills and 3.34 kills per set in 2023-24.
Through the first two games, the Huskies are off to a nice start offensively as the Dogs sit in third place in the Canada West with a .341 hitting percentage.
Record-wise Saskatchewan is now 2-0, while Mount Royal finds themselves at 2-2 in the early goings of the 2024 Canada West season.
