LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western’s Anselm Rein (Erfurt, Germany) has been named Canada West Men’s Volleyball Player of the Week for the weekend of March 1-3. The second-year setter had a near record-breaking weekend, leading the No. 8 Spartans to a 3-1, 0-3, 3-0 defeat of the No. 9 Winnipeg Wesmen in the Canada West sem-final. The victory sends the Spartans to a record 12th straight Canada West final.
Rein’s blistering serve was on full display last weekend. The human kinetics student’s eight service aces in Thursday’s 3-1 win were just one off the TWU and Canada West record for service aces in a playoff match. He added 33 assists in the victory, also contributing three blocks.
His setting accuracy and smart decision-making was evident all weekend, delivering 98 total set assists over ten sets, along with six blocks. He was at his best in a do-or-die situation in Game 3 on Saturday night, finishing the match with 32 set assists while helping TWU hit at a series-best .356.
The Canada West post-season record of nine service aces in a match was set by former Spartan Josh Howatson ’07, in a 3-1 win over the Wesmen on February 18, 2005, in the Canada West Quarter Final.
The Spartans will now travel to Edmonton next Friday to take on familiar rival Alberta in the CW Final. It’ll be the fourth straight year the two conference powerhouses meet up in the conference championship, with first serve set for 7 p.m. MT. The match can be seen live on CBCsports.ca.
