Canada starts phase 2 of World Championship with a win

Oct. 04 2022: Canada carried its winning streak into phase 2 (Pool F) of the FIVB Volleyball World Championship in Lodz, Poland on Tuesday.

Today it was Thailand that fell 1-3 (19-25, 21-25, 25-23, 22-25), earning Canada’s women’s team its fourth win in a row at the tournament.

“I thought we did a great job of executing the game plan,” said head coach Shannon Winzer. “We were fairly consistent throughout the match. In the third set when we were behind, we were trying to do too much, but we came back to the fourth set like we approached the first two – let’s keep calm, get the good reads, let’s get good moves and control what we can, which works for us.”

Canada led in attack points (65-63) and dominated in block points (13-5). Service aces were even at four and Canada earned one more point than Thailand off errors (16-15).

Alexa Gray and Canadian teammate Kiera Van Ryk contributed 25 points each, and Thailand’s Pimpichaya Kokram had 24 points for her team.

“We are serving tough this tournament and it’s getting teams out of system and that’s helping us huge with defense,” said Gray. “All the hard work in practice is paying off…. I think we’re playing real well as a unit and players are coming off the bench and making great plays, and I’m really excited as we have a solid team.”
