Canada eliminated from Men’s World Championship

Aug. 31, 2022: Canada fell to Türkiye 0-3 (23-25, 23-25,17-25) today at the Men’s Volleyball World Championship in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Türkiye’s win secured that team second place in Pool E behind Italy to advance, while third-place Canada had to play the waiting game to see the outcome of other matches before knowing its fate.

Specifically, Canada was watching Serbia’s match with Tunisia, which ended in a 3-0 loss for Tunisia, but overall that team had point ratio of 0.900 compared with Canada’s 0.891. This meant Canada just missed out on being one of the four best third-placed teams to qualify for the elimination round. Canada finishes 17th overall.

In today’s match, Nicholas Hoag, Ryan Sclater and Stephen Maar contributed 15 points each, with Hoag managing four of Canada’s seven ace serves. Canada won in service (7-5) and attack points (44-43), but fell short in blocking (2-7) and made twice as many errors as Türkiye with 20.

The competition, held in Poland and Slovenia, started out with 24 competing teams spread across six pools of four, playing in a single round-robin format.

The next round begins on September 03.
