BLUES DEFEAT LIONS FOR FIRST EXHIBITION WIN

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team secured a decisive 3-1 victory over the York Lions on September 21, 2024, at the Goldring Centre.

The Blues dominated the opening set, winning 25-14, showcasing their offensive strength with a .458 hitting percentage. They continued their momentum into the second set, taking it 25-19, despite York showing signs of resistance.

However, the Lions fought back in the third set, improving their hitting and claiming the set 25-11.

In the fourth and final set, the Varsity Blues regained their composure and sealed the match with a 25-17 win. Key players for Toronto included Jayden Talsma, who led with 12 kills, and Justin Peng, who contributed 11 kills and seven digs. Setter Michael Hickey was instrumental, with 39 assists and six digs. Lukas Humle also had a strong performance, adding seven kills and two service aces to Toronto’s tally.

York’s top performer was Nathan Luken, who recorded 12 kills, though his efforts weren’t enough to overcome Toronto’s balanced attack. The Blues’ defence, with 51 digs, proved crucial in maintaining control throughout the match.

The Varsity Blues will look to build on this performance throughout the rest of the pre-season to enter the regular season with confidence. Their next fixtures will be during the Humber College Tournament from September 27-29.
