The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team defeated the No. 4 nationally-ranked Queen’s Gaels 3-0 on Friday (Jan.12) night.
Set scores for the match were 25-22, 25-21, 25-22.
Both the offence and defence performed exceptionally well in the game to secure the victory for the Blues. The Blues defence topped Queen’s in total digs and the offence with a superior hitting percentage, while maintaining minimal attack errors. This led to numerous lengthy rallies throughout the sets, which the Blues were able to capitalize on.
Second-year outside hitter Olivia Zhu led the Blues with a game-high 18 points. She registered 16 kills, one service ace, and one solo block. Fellow third-year outside hitter Julia Mumann also reached double-digits with 10 points for the evening, tallying nine kills and one solo block. Murmann also led the team defensively in digs with 14.
The Blues offence was guided by first-year setter Anna Arellano who registered a game-high 26 assists through the three sets.
Queen’s outside hitter Mary Stewart led the Gaels, tallying 10.5 total points on the night from eight kills, two services aces, and one block assist.
The Blues will return to Goldring Centre on Saturday (Jan. 13) afternoon for their second match against the Queen’s Gaels in the back-to-back. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tickets for Blues home games are available at varsityblues.ca/tickets, while all matches are streamed online at oua.tv.
