LIONS OUTLASTED BY GRYPHONS IN THRILLING FIVE-SET SHOWDOWN

The York University Lions men’s volleyball team came up short in a highly competitive five-set match against the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday night. York took the first set 25-14 with a fantastic offensive display by Andrew Tauhid before losing the following two 18-25 and 25-23. The Lions won the fourth set to force a fifth, with Josh Fadare putting in an incredible showing to keep the Lions in the match. York took the fourth 25-23. The final set saw the Lions lose 15-13, resulting in their second loss in as many nights

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Lions took the first set after amassing an eight-point lead which they maintained throughout the set. Tauhid’s scoring prowess played a key role in the Lions success. Dennis Cota and Alex Dorling both secured key blocks as well. York took the first set 25-14 withTauhid fittingly winning the set with a kill off his serve.
  • York lost the following two sets 25-18 and 25-23, respectively. Dorling and Fadare continued to do their part to keep the team within striking distance, but ultimately the Gryphons were too much for. In the third set the Guelph jumped out to a nine-point lead which the Lions were able to cut to two point  but were unable to achieve the turn-around.
  • The Lions took the fourth set through a hotly-contested and highly competitive set which saw both teams have the lead for long stretches. York scored seven straight points to open the set but the Gryphons rallied to take a two-point lead. York responded to re-take the lead after several errors both on the service and defensive end. Fadare ultimately won the set with a great kill to send the match to a deciding set.
  • Unfortunately for the Lions, they would lose the final set 15-13. Despite an inspired display by Dorling, Fadare and Tauhid to erase a four-point deficit, the game was won by Guelph via a game winning block that sealed the five-set victory for the Gryhons.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions remain out on the road to finish up the fall portion of their schedule as they face the Trent Excalibur next Saturday in Peterborough. First serve will fly at 3:00 pm
