MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: LAKERS COMEBACK BID FALLS SHORT IN 3-2 LOSS TO WINDSOR

Box Score As they battle for positioning and a post-season berth, the Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team welcomed a tough opponent to town this weekend.

The Lakers hosted the Windsor Lancers for their first of two matches Friday night at the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.

Despite fighting back from down 2-0, the Lakers fell 3-2 to the Lancers in an impressive matchup.

The Lancers got the jump on the Lakers, getting out to a quick 15-9 lead.

They extended that advantage to 20-17 late in the set and pushed the Lakers to the edge, up 24-22, looking to take the first set.

Windsor made no mistake putting the opening game away, taking a 1-0 lead on the Lakers.

The Lancers kept rolling early in the second, leading 5-0 early and in complete control.

A 10-9 run put Windsor ahead 15-9 and they held on after a late push by the Lakers, for a 25-19 win to go up 2-0 in the match.

In the third set, as they looked to stay alive, the Lakers trailed Windsor midway through, 14-12, but took a lead as the teams approached the 20-point plateau.

Windsor stormed back from down one, to up two, 21-19.

Both teams traded points as the Lancers hung on to a 21-20 advantage late in the set.

Nipissing and Windsor put on a show, going deep into the third set, trading points and sitting tied from 23-23 all the way to 29-29.

The Lakers dug for the final two points, taking the set 31-29 to force a fourth set.

While it wasn’t easy, the Lakers claimed the fourth set, winning 26-24.

After being tied 9-9 early and trailing 18-7 late, the Lakers stormed back to edge Windsor in the set to push the match to a fifth and deciding game.

In the fifth, with the match even, the Lancers jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead on the Lakers.

With their early lead they were able to hold on and come away with a 15-9 win and take the match 3-2.

Jackson Young had a huge match, posting 33 kills while Marc Marchand added 13 for the Lakers.

The teams wrap up their weekend series Saturday afternoon at 2pm.
