Manitoba’s Surinx and Saskatchewan’s Mortensen named U SPORTS volleyball players of the week

Manitoba’s Raya Surinx and Saskatchewan’s Dylan Mortensen have been named the U SPORTS volleyball players of the week for the period ending March 12, 2023.

Raya Surinx is the U SPORTS player of the week in women’s volleyball after an impressive 26.5 point performance in the Canada West bronze-medal game against the Winnipeg Wesmen. Surinx collected a career-high 26 kills, the seventh most in a five-set playoff game in Canada West history. The rookie also had 19 digs in the 3-2 win over their local rivals. Through the playoffs, Surinx leads U SPORTS in kills per set at 5.0 and points per set with 5.6.


The Bisons will be back in action in the 2023 U SPORTS Women’s Volleyball Championship, presented by Mikasa in Vancouver, starting March 17.

Dylan Mortensen is the U SPORTS player of the week in men’s volleyball after leading his Saskatchewan Huskies to a Canada West bronze medal win and a berth in the 2023 U SPORTS national championship tournament. Mortensen, a leader on Canada West’s all-time kills list, proved why he holds the title earning 24 kills and 26 points in the bronze match versus the Calgary Dinos. He also picked up eight digs and a service ace in the Huskies’ 3-1 win against the Dinos.

The Huskies will now turn their attention to the 2023 U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championship, presented by Mikasa on March 17th. This will be their first appearance at the national championship tournament since 2016.
