Indoor Women Sweep Korea for First VNL Win of 2023

June 02, 2023: The Canadian women logged their first Volleyball Nations League (VNL) win of 2023 – a decisive 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-18) match over Korea.

“Today we wanted to come out and focus on our side. Our aim was to play clean, play smart and be relentless. I think we did those things and it’s great to get our first win on the board,” said Head Coach Shannon Winzer.

Layne Van Buskirk, of Windsor, Ont., led the team in scoring for the second straight day with 18 points, while Alexa Gray of Calgary added 11.

This match against Korea will be featured on CBC TV on Saturday at 4 pm ET.

Canada’s next match is against top-ranked Serbia on Sunday, June 04.

Results to date:

Poland v. Canada 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 15-13)
Canada v. Thailand 0-3 (17-25, 24-26, 21-25)
Canada v. Korea 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-18)

VNL 2023 is played based on the same competition formula as in 2022, featuring 16 teams per gender. A total of 104 matches per gender will be played across the preliminary and final phases, with every team playing a minimum of 12 matches.

The first week of the men’s event kicks off in Ottawa, Ontario, at the Arena at TD Place on June 06. The Canadian men’s final roster is expected to be released on June 02.
