Huskies roll to straight sets victory

The Huskies move to 7-1 on the season.

SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s volleyball team moved to 7-1 on the season with a convincing three-set win — 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-19) over the visiting Brandon Bobcats on Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court at the PAC.

It’s been a dominant stretch for the Dogs, who have not lost in 71 days, with their last defeat coming back on Nov. 5, 2021 in their season-opener against Brandon. Since then, they’ve been lights out. They’ve rallied off seven-straight wins and now, have won their last 12 sets.

Emily Koshinsky continued a tremendous season for the Huskies, as the fifth-year outside hitter had a game-high 14 kills on the afternoon. Olivia Mattern had nine of her own, while Averie Allard chipped in three service aces in the win.

On the Brandon side, as is often the case, Ravyn Wiebe led the way for the visitors, compiling 10 kills on a .310 hitting-percentage. Saskatoon product Alexa Shoults notched three assists and a service ace on her hometown court for the Bobcats.

With the weekend sweep, Saskatchewan gains some separation atop the east division. The Huskies, who entered the weekend with the Bobcats only one-game back, are now three-wins clear of their weekend foe with just eight regular-season games remaining.

Meanwhile, Brandon falls to 4-4 with the defeat, but still sit in a comfortable spot within the east division with at least the four top-teams in the division reaching the postseason.

After trailing 11-9 early in the first set, Saskatchewan took control and pulled away, before a Koshinsky kill finished off the first set for the homeside.

It was more of the same in the second frame as the Huskies led from near start-to-finish, which was capped by a Mandi Fraser block — one of three on the afternoon — to grab control of the match.

The Huskies closed the third-and-final set of the afternoon in style with a frame of a .412 hitting-percentage, to record the straight-set sweep of Brandon.

The Huskies are back in action next weekend in the Queen City, as they go toe-to-toe with their provincial rival Regina Cougars in the weekend series as they look to extend their seven-game winning streak.

Meanwhile, Brandon will enjoy a bye-week before getting back in action on Jan. 27 against the Winnipeg Wesmen in Winnipeg.
