Cougars return favour; sweep Winnipeg in three

After losing in three on Friday night, the Regina Cougars roared back with a vengeance in the second game of the weekend.

One day after losing in three sets to Winnipeg, the University of Regina’s women’s volleyball team returned the favour with a straight-sets sweep over the Wesmen on Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars took the opening two sets by scores of 26-24 and 25-19, but Winnipeg led for the majority of the third. The Wesmen led 23-20 and it looked like the match would be headed to a fourth set, but the Cougars got right back into it thanks to four consecutive points with Claire Sheppard on serve.

That gave the Cougars match point which Winnipeg was able to evade, then the Cougars staved off two set points themselves with kills by Jessica Lerminiaux and Katie House. House added another kill to put the Cougars up one, then Bailey Balaberda clinched the 28-26 win and the match with a kill from the left side.

Lerminiaux and House led Regina (3-5) offensively with 13 kills and 12 kills, respectively, while House also hit a team-leading .357 for the match. Sierra Parris-Kruger piled up 21 digs to lead all players in that category.

Ashleigh Laube had a match-high 16 kills for Winnipeg, which falls to 3-5 with the setback. Selva Planincic added 11 kills, while Kely Warmington had six kills and no errors on just 12 attacks while also tying Planincic for the match high with five blocks.

Both teams are scheduled to be back in action next weekend. The Cougars are back at home with two matches against Saskatchewan, while Winnipeg visits crosstown foe Manitoba for a single match on Friday night.
