Scoring, League Volleyball Rules & Etiquette

Scoring:

  • Teams receive 1 point for each set won in the regular season

  • Teams are guaranteed to play two 2-set Matches each night. Starting times may vary

  • Scores & Schedules will be updated within a few days of your league’s matches

  • Tie-breaks will be determined by Points For/Points Against differential

  • Any scoring discrepancies can be addressed by contacting [email protected]

  • Games are played to a hard cap at 25 points. This means there’s NO ‘Win by 2’ rules, meaning that if the score is 24-24, the next point wins the set.

    League General Details:

  • If a league is not ‘full’ at the start of the season, Momentum will seek to add teams in the later weeks of the season. During this time, teams will be able to play additional matches during their night!

  • There are no referees, and teams call their own fouls. In/out calls should be made on your own team’s side FIRST, however, if there is a disputed point that cannot be resolved by BOTH TEAMS, the point will be re-served.

  • Teams must submit a roster of at least 6 players in order to register. Teams must keep their roster size under 10 players, and if you have more than 8 players attending consistently, we encourage you to consider splitting into two teams if the space is available in the league!

  • Co-Ed leagues must maintain a 4:2 gender ratio on the court for your team at all times for Co-Ed leagues

  • If a team has only 5 players at the start of the game, they can still play but will leave one position open and lose a point & their serve every time that zone rotates to serve.

  • If a team cannot field the minimum 5 eligible players at the start of the game, they will be given a 5-minute grace period for their teammates to arrive and start the first set 0-10. If after 10 minutes a team cannot field 5 eligible players, the team will forfeit the set.

  • Uniforms or matching shirts are not mandatory, but encouraged!

  • While this is an ADULT league, occasionally a talented youth player may wish to join a team. If so, the minimum age for any participant is 15 years old

  • Washrooms are available, but there are no official dressing rooms or showers

    Equipment:

  • Standard net heights will be used for each league based on Men’s/Women’s/Co-Ed standard height. Men’s: 2.43m; Women’s: 2.24m; Co-Ed: 2.34m

  • The Molten or Wilson indoor volleyball will be used. League balls will be provided by Momentum

    General League Volleyball Rules:

  • Hand-passing/volleying the serve is allowed

  • For back-row players, you must jump from behind the Attack Line if you are spiking above the height of the net

  • ALL net touches are a violation, and a point is awarded to the other team

  • If any part of your body touches or crosses the centre line, it is a violation and a point is awarded to the other team

  • Teams must follow a standard rotation (clockwise) and if a team is rotating in a player, they must enter the court in Zone 6 (middle-back)

  • Any part of the body can be used to play the ball

  • There is no Libero position allowed

  • Blocks do NOT count as a ‘touch’ in indoor volleyball, and the team still has 3 contacts to play the ball after the block

  • Stepping on or over the service line is a fault, and both feet must be behind the service line when you serve. On a jump serve, a player is allowed to jump from behind the service line, and land in front of it; at The York School, we do not call end line violations unless both feet are over the end line

First Night Details

  • Arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start of your league with your full roster

  • Ball warmup can only be done on the court (not in hallways!) and will start at the beginning time of your league

  • If you would like more than the few minutes to warm up your body, we strongly encourage you to arrive earlier!

  • League schedules can be found above for all leagues. They will be updated within a few days of your last league night.

  • Jerseys or matching uniforms are not required, but always encouraged

  • We will be taking pictures at our league nights and sharing them on our Momentum social media! Find us at @momentumvballprograms on Instagram!

Intermediate is for teams that are consistently playing 3 contacts, setting attackers to spike on third contact and with an understanding of rotations and positions. Early Intermediate teams are on the path to move up to the next level of league with some improvement.

Intermediate Plus is for teams running a 2-setter or 1-setter system, often with specialized positions and with 2-3 consistent attacking options. Teams are capable of attacking from the front or back row, and consistently able to spike on a downwards trajectory.

How Do I Check My Weekly League Schedule?

Our Monday to Friday evening league schedules can be found by clicking the "Current League Schedule & Standings" button on the Adult Volleyball Programs page: https://momentumvolleyball.ca/adult-leagues

How Do The League Waitlists Work?

Returning teams/individuals from ongoing leagues have the first opportunity to renew their spot for the next season. We will only open registration for the spots available once our team re-signing period passes in mid-season, and we then offer spaces to our waitlisted teams next. If you are interested in joining one of our leagues, you can sign up on the waitlist, and as soon as a team/individual spot opens up, you'll be given the opportunity to secure your spot within a certain timeframe. If you don't confirm before the provided timeframe expires, the spot is then given to the next person on the waitlist.

If I Sign Up As An Individual For A League, Am I Guaranteed A Full Team?

We try our best to ensure that all our individual teams have 6 players. In cases where someone cannot make their games, it's best to notify us ahead of time via email, and we can assist with finding subs!

Can Friends Or Family Watch The League Games?

We do not allow spectators for our league games at The York School. It is important to check the requirements at each one of our locations, as different facilities have different rules!

Are There Refunds Or Rain Checks If I Miss My Clinic or Drop-In Session?

No, there are no refunds for missed sessions, and they are not transferrable.

When Do Drop-In Registrations Open?

Drop-in registrations open 14 days before the session date.

What Happens If The Drop-In Or Technical Training Session I Signed Up And Paid For Is Cancelled?

In the unfortunate case a drop-in or clinic is cancelled, you will be notified ASAP via email, and your payment will be fully refunded.

How Far In Advance Will I Be Notified Of A School Closure/Cancellation?

We aim to provide notice of closures/cancellations as early as possible to minimize any inconveniences, so as soon as we are notified by the facility, we do our best to notify all affected players ASAP!

What Is Taught During The Clinic Training (Lessons, Advice, Teaching Techniques, Peppering, Etc.)?

Our sessions are focused on technical training, for athletes to learn and develop their skills. Our coaches teach all techniques used in volleyball!

Do The Clinics Include Practice Games?

Our sessions are focused on training. There is some gameplay, but no formalized teams or matches, and the sessions are focused on players getting better at the game.

Can I Join A Clinic With A Friend?

This is always subject to availability! Our programs fill up quickly, so if you are interested in signing up with a friend(s), we suggest moving quickly.

Are There Requirements To Join The Clinics?

There are no requirements. Athletes and families self-assess based on the level they think they best fit with, and select the programs they would like. If our staff feel that a program is not the right fit for an athlete, we will recommend other options or refund for the program!
